CAR HIRE GENEVA AIRPORT
From November to April all the cars from Geneva airport Switzerland are supplied with the mandatory winter equipment. Note however that this is a local cost option, you cannot elect to not pay it. The cost varies fractionally from hire company to hire company but plan on CHF 10/day around £5 per day.
All the cars supplied on the Swiss side of Geneva airport are equipped with the appropriate sticker to allow travel on the Swiss motorway network.
On the French side of Geneva airport, none of the cars have Swiss toll stickers and they are not equipped with snow tyres or chains, unless these are separately ordered and paid for locally. Accidentally straying on to a Swiss motorway will cost Euros 40 for the road toll. It's valid for a year but that doesn't help you if you only want to use the road for a couple of hours.
Cars supplied on either side of the border have an insurance excess in the event of a claim. While very few people fall foul of this, for peace of mind it is worth considering taking out insurance at this end, just in case. We have had good reports about Insurance4carhire.com, premiums are fine, particularly if you are a regular hire car user as they cover the bits that are not usually included, wheels and tyres, glass, locks, keys and so on. And for the hire car heavy user the annual policies represent very good value for money.
Second drivers are normally an extra cost option, payable locally. It is worth considering whether it is worthwhile; those of us who dislike being driven are not going to give up the driving seat willingly.
