For car hire at Geneva airport one has the choice of collecting cars from either the Swiss side of the border or for the masochist, the French side. Cars are cheaper in France but they are not equipped with the Swiss motorway toll sticker, during winter they do not have snow tyres and chains which are mandatory in Switzerland and you have to drive to the Alps without touching a Swiss motorway, the cost of the toll sticker adding Euros 40 straight away if you do. In addition, returning cars to French Geneva airport is a challenge as all the signposted roads direct you to the "main" entrance in Switzerland and it is surprisingly hard to get back over to the French side so leave plenty of time, aeroplanes don't wait. There is however a handy map at this link which shows the navigation and has directions to various areas.By contrast, the cars originating in Switzerland have the necessary road toll stickers; during the winter season they are equipped with the mandatory snow tyres and chains, albeit at an extra cost payable on arrival and navigation to and from the airport is relatively simple.
